Hyde Park Jazz Festival Presented Two Works
2019
The Hyde Park Jazz Festival presented The Story of 400 Years by Isaiah Collier & the Chosen Few, a sonic narrative of African American history exploring the resilience and continual rebirth of Black culture; and Requiem for Jazz by composer, clarinetist, and singer Angel Bat Dawid, a 12-part multimedia jazz funeral, developed in response to Chicago-born filmmaker Edward Bland’s 1959 film The Cry of Jazz, that draws on the tradition of hush harbors (secret religious services in which slaves practiced their own rituals).
